La Balagne and its villages
Known as the "garden of Corsica" because of its fertile hill country, you'll be more than pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the Balagne region's scenery. Besides that, many of its traditions have also survived intact.
A description of the Balagne region would be incomplete if we didn't mention Calvi and Ile Rousse, its two coastal resorts, famous for their many celebrations and festivals. But, as you venture further into the Balagne countryside, you can also soak up the atmosphere of its characteristic villages and their warm welcome. At the foot of Montegrosso, there's Calenzana set among the olive groves. Other stopping places include the three villages of Montegrosso, Lunghignano and its oil mill, Cassano and its star-shaped village 'square', and Montemaggiore with its superlative views of the bay of Calvi. Or else there's Sant'Antonino, a perfectly preserved medieval village, or Pigna, an active crafts centre… Cutler, beekeeper, potter, glass blower … all craftsmen you can meet as you take the Balagne's "road of the craftsmen".
